5 Computer Tech Notes

Turn it Off, Turn it Back On:
Nine times out of ten, rebooting your computer, and any equipment that connects to it, will solve the problem."

We're like Santa:
We know if you've been bad or good. Fessing up to what really happened right before the system crashed is going to save time, and were going to figure it out anyway.

Virus Protection:
Make sure you have current antivirus and anti-spyware protection, and set it to update a least once a day and run a full-system scan at least once a week.

Public Wi-Fi:
Remember public wi-fi is PUBLIC. If you don't have a compelling reason to check your e-mail or bank account while sipping a latte at the mall, don't do it. While you're on a public network, even one that's encrypted, a nearby hacker can capture your passwords.

No:
No you can't use your cell phone to pop popcorn. Next time an Internet rumor drops into your inbox, don't just pass it on, check it out a http://www.snopes.com/ first.

Green Technology

Switch Your Cordless Phone For A Corded One;

Though most of us now rely on cellular phones, cordless phones are still a staple in many households. Alas, the cordless phone is an energy vampire sitting in a recharging cradle plugged into an AC outlet; it sucks down power 24/7. Since you don’t want to go through the house disconnecting chargers every time you go out, why not switch back to a good old corded phone?

“You’ll save on your energy bill, you won’t lose service during a power outage and a corded phone doesn’t put out a radio signal that can interfere with other wifi devises and appliances, such as your microwave oven.”
(Don’t forget to unplug cell phone chargers, which draw power even when not in use).

Cell Phone Collection Drive

More than 150,000 troops are serving overseas and are away from their families. Cell Phones for Soldiers and North Coast Phone & Computer are calling on all Americans to support, for these brave men and women by donating your unused cell phones. .

Cell Phones for Soldiers was founded by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist from Norwell, Mass., with $21 of their own money. Since then, the registered 501c3 non-profit organization has raised almost $1 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers serving overseas.

The phones are sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone – enough to provide an hour of talk time to soldiers abroad.

“We're proud to show our support for U.S. Soldiers, and to contribute to a worthy cause like Cell Phones for Soldier's,”

Backing Up Your Documents

Everything is in digital format these days, family photos, videos, music collections, address books, banking and more, but they may be lost forever if your computer crashes. To save these precious documents and files,

Back Them Up!
Here’s How.

Get Organized. Put all of the documents you create, the pictures you take and the music you buy in a single master folder on your computer. Divide the master folder into subfolders to keep you files organized. The “My Documents” folder is a good place to store files on any computer with Windows. When all of your personal files are in one place your less likely to forget a file when you back up. You can even place your Favorites and Email contacts into a folder.

Back Up Regularly. Back up your files regularly. If you work on your computer daily, you should back up important files daily. Then, back up everything at least once a week or so.

Where To Back Up. You can back up to CDs or DVDs, an external hard drive, or small USB Flash (Thumb) drives can store up to 4 Gigabits.
